Sustainability Victoria Transit mode race
The 'meeting place race' was just over 2 km in total 'as the crow flies' to
Going Solar at the Green Building of 60 Leceister Street, Carlton. The race
incorporated all of the normal elements of having to attend a meeting (given
the chosen mode of transport): waiting for public transport, finding a
car-park, booking a vehicle, un-locking and locking up the bike etc. In the
case of the taxi, it was made to wait for 5 minutes at Going Solar and was the
only anomaly from business as usual (without the engine running of course!).
The race started and ended inside SV's office. Contestants had to arrive at
Going Solar in a presentable state, ready to go and in possession of business
card for a meeting. Points were to be deducted for receiving a
speeding, parking, or other fine and added for finishing in the top three. The
Bicycle won, the Car second and the Taxi was third. A five minute discussion
was generated after the arrival of all participants about the ramifications of
their trip. - What greenhouse gases did they think their trip produced? - What
loss of amenity did they think that their mode of transport has caused to
others? - What did they think were the ramifications and costs of any
requirements for parking (vehicles/bikes) or keeping taxis waiting? The event
was seen very successful and interesting for all participants. For more
