Case Study: Moreland City Council Metcard and Bike Loan Scheme

Moreland City Council has a loan scheme to make it cheaper to travel by bike or public transport.

The Sustainable Travel Loan Scheme offers each permanent staff member up to $2,000.00 each year to purchase:

  • A bicycle
  • An annual public transport ticket for yourself or
  • An annual concession public transport ticket for student in your family

Council will buy these items for you, then you pay Council back with fortnightly salary deductions. You have up to one year to pay off the loan, which is interest free.

To purchase a bike

Step 1: Go to a bike shop, find a bike you like and get the shop to give you a written quote.
Step 2: A council employee organises the paperwork for Council to buy the bike and the regular salary deductions so you can pay back the loan. This takes about 2 days.

Step 3: Collect the bike from the shop. The shop will invoice Council directly.

To purchase an annual public transport ticket for yourself

As a staff member you can save between $14 to $22 per fortnight on the cost of travelling to work by buying a yearly ticket through Council.

Moreland City Council runs a Commuter Club that offers a 10% discount for staff who buy an annual Metcard. Combine this offer with Moreland's Sustainable Transport Scheme that allows you to spread the cost of the ticket over the year and it makes travelling by public transport very affordable
