Australians are driving their way to obesity

A STUDY has found that while Australia is one of the world's fattest nations, we cycle and walk an average 555km a year, burning 90,000 kilojoules. The research, published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, compared active transport levels and obesity rates in 17 countries. The Australian statistics were streets ahead of Americans and marginally better than the British, but well behind the more active Europeans. The average European burns 99,000kj cycling and walking 759km each year. The Dutch were the most active commuters, cycling and walking 1225km each year, covering 670km and burning 36,000kj more than Australians.
